The Greatest Reason in The World to Start Your Own Garden...Even If You Have a Black Thumb: Happiness! And Tomatoes!
Gardens and nature have therapeutic and preventive powers that physicians have ignored for too long.
In this talk, I briefly review existing literature about the preventive and therapeutic effects of exposure to nature in ameliorating stress and depression, lowering blood pressure and even lengthening telomeres. I identify situations in which “nature-based therapy” might be considered and prescribed.
Serious healthcare research into nature-based therapy is in its infancy, but historically, many medical center campuses featured medicinal and demonstration gardens as laboratories for instruction of pharmacy and medical students. As a new field in medicine that bridges occupational therapy, internal medicine, psychology and pharmacy, nature-based therapy aims to synthesize research, clinical care, education, and policy. Linking the health and wellbeing of humans to the health and wellbeing of the environment can have powerfully beneficial effects for both…often, in just a few minutes.
Should Doctors Prescribe Wine? And to Whom?
Well-being is an underestimated goal of medicine: I believe it is the primary goal. The notion of “healthy life expectancy”, i.e., life expectancy without having a severe disability, is one that people deserve, instead of just longevity.
Prescribing wine and ‘medically supervised’ wine tasting with patients near the end of life is currently illicit in most health care institutions. But it deserves a place at the table, paired with compassion, empathy and good, personal medical care. And better wine is better for you.
